PETRONAS CARIGALI MAKES MALAYSIA'S FIRST BASEMENT OIL DISCOVERY
PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, the upstream exploration and production arm of PETRONAS, has discovered oil in the basement of an exploration well drilled within the Southern Malay Basin offshore Terengganu, the first of such discovery in Malaysia.
The Anding Utara-1 exploration well and its sidetrack were drilled recently and both tested oil and gas in the basement, the bottom layer of a hydrocarbon prospect usually devoid of any potential.
The Anding Utara-1 well was drilled to a total depth of 2,610 metres, including 120 metres of vertical depth into the basement. The sidetrack well reached a total depth of 2,740 metres, including 250 metres of penetration into the basement. Anding Utara is located within the Malong-Sotong-Anding Production Sub-block of Block PM12.
PETRONAS Carigali has completed conventional testing of the wells and is evaluating the potential of this discovery.

Shell and Malaysia's National Oil Company sign Production Sharing Contracts for Deepwater Blocks Offshore Sabah
16 February 2005
Earlier today, two Shell Malaysia exploration and production companies, Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited and Shell Sabah Selatan Sdn. Bhd, together with PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd signed two new Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) with Malaysia's national oil company, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), for deepwater Blocks ND6 and ND7, offshore East Sabah. Both blocks are located in waters of up to 4,000 m depth in the South China Sea. The PSCs were signed by PETRONAS’ President & Chief
Executive Officer, Tan Sri Dato Sri Mohd Hassan Marican, PETRONAS Carigali’s Managing Director, Mr. Johari Dasri, and Shell Malaysia’s Chairman, Datuk Jon Chadwick, at the PETRONAS Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Under the terms of the new PSCs, Shell Malaysia and PETRONAS Carigali will jointly operate the PSCs. Under the Joint Operating Agreements (JOA’s), Shell Malaysia and PETRONAS Carigali each hold a 50% equity stake in the respective Blocks.
The contracts envisage an exploration programme comprising additional seismic acquisition, followed by exploration drilling, during one or more exploration periods spanning at least seven years. At the signing ceremony, Shell Malaysia Chairman, Datuk Jon Chadwick said of the new PSCs, “These contracts extend and build upon the cooperation between Shell and PETRONAS.
In addition, this is an excellent fit with Shell's deepwater technological capabilities and will potentially increase our existing oil and gas portfolio.” Successful exploration in the designated acreages will lead to follow-up drilling and deepwater development, allowing Shell to deploy its deepwater experience gained from its ultra deepwater successes such as in the Gulf of Mexico. “On behalf of Shell in Malaysia, I am very pleased with these agreements - the award of the ND6 & ND7 blocks underscore the national oil company's continued confidence in the value Shell adds to the upstream oil and gas industry in Malaysia, and provides further opportunities for Shell to continue to play an active role in building deepwater capacities within Malaysia,” concluded Chadwick. Shell Malaysia already has active participating interests in 17 PSCs in various offshore blocks in East and West Malaysia.
